The Alabama Gulf Coast is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse wildlife not only in the South but also in the U.S. In fact, the state of Alabama was recently dubbed “America’s Amazon” because of the truly remarkable array of plants and animals found in coastal Alabama.
From our gorgeous white-sand beaches and sparkling bayous and lakes, to pitcher plant bogs, wildlife refuges, and nature preserves filled with unique flora and fauna, coastal Alabama is a one-of-a-kind place waiting to be explored.
Here’s a look at five nature-filled adventures you can experience on your next getaway to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
Gulf State Park
Gulf State Park is among one of the state’s and country’s most unique parks. The 6,150-acre park is home to three lakes, a beach, and nine different ecosystems. No matter how you adventure, there is something for everyone within this expansive state park.
For the fisherman in your group, visit the Gulf State Park Fishing and Education Pier. With nearly 2,500 feet of fishing space, this is the largest pier in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as Alabama’s only public fishing pier on the Gulf.
To make things convenient, you can purchase a fishing license, bait, tackle, and perhaps a souvenir at the pier’s on-site store. The pier’s shaded seating and concessions make for an even more relaxing fishing experience.
Love a good nature hike? Don’t miss out on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, a 28+ mile paved trail system that winds visitors throughout scenic Gulf State Park. Hike, run, bike, take a Segway tour, or simply stroll through the various ecosystems of Gulf State Park and enjoy the beauty. The trails are even ADA-compliant, so everyone can enjoy the views.
In the heart of Gulf State Park lies the glimmering Lake Shelby. This freshwater lake is ideal for fishing, swimming, kayaking, or boating. Enjoy a picnic at one of the many tables surrounding the lake. There are even charcoal grills if you’d like to cook your catch or grill some picnic classics while you’re there.
Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge
Get an up-close look at the natural habitats of native flora and fauna when you visit Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is a part of Alabama’s Coastal Connection and includes a network of hiking trails perfect for the outdoor adventurer.
While exploring this natural oasis of wildlands, you’ll see a wide variety of local plant and animal life, such as the endangered sea turtle, the Alabama sea mouse, or even a bald eagle.
Depending on what time of year you visit, you may find a variety of migrating birds like multiple types of ducks, songbirds, and owls that make the Alabama Gulf Coast their seasonal home.
Explore the park on your own, or you can schedule a guided walk so you can learn while you take in the beauty of the surrounding nature.
Graham Creek Nature Preserve
Discover the 500-acre Graham Creek Nature Preserve with hundreds of plant and wildlife species, like pine trees, pitcher plants, sabal palms and the magnificent live oak tree.
There are plenty of recreation activities for you to enjoy while visiting the preserve. Launch your kayak for an adventure through the wetlands. Try your hand at disc golf in one of the three courses. Practice your archery skills. Or take a leisurely stroll with your four-legged friend on one of the trails. Keep an eye out for native birds—including bald eagles and ospreys—in the trees and skies above.
Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
The Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is the perfect place for an educational experience.
This public research facility encompasses more than 9,000 acres of protected habitats around Weeks Bay, Fish River, and Magnolia River. Discover this unique habitat with diverse species of wildlife that thrive in estuary environments, like crayfish, the eastern indigo snake, and the Alabama red-bellied turtle.
Visit the interpretive center with indoor displays and live animals, like baby alligators and a variety of freshwater fish. The reserve also includes forested boardwalk nature trails you can explore on your own or on a guided group tour to see the animals in their natural habitats.
Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

The 25-acre zoo provides a spacious environment for a variety of animals and family-friendly activities and is loved by locals and visitors alike. In 2020, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo moved from its 7-acre park to the new, larger-than-life facility for their 600+ animals.
Schedule an animal encounter for an even richer experience with the residents. Come to one of the interactive animal shows for a one-of-a-kind experience. There’s even plenty of space for your next family reunion, wedding, or any other event!
Beaches
While exploring the beaches, you’ll be amazed at the natural beauty that surrounds you. Listen as the turquoise waters of the Gulf hit the white-sand shore. Watch as different species of birds such as gulls, egrets, or hawks fly overhead.
There’s no wrong time to visit the beach. Alabama’s 32 miles of pristine, white-sand shores are laced with grass-covered sand dunes that are home to an array of wildlife, including owls, the Alabama beach mouse, a variety of crab species, and more. Not to mention the beach is the perfect place to enjoy a famous Gulf Coast sunset!
