Mark your calendars, the 4th Annual Bids, Brews and Beats Benefit for Secret Meals for Hungry Children is May 5th, from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. at the Flora Bama with live music and a silent auction. 100% of the proceeds go directly to our Secret Meals and stays in our area benefiting the needy children of South Alabama and Northwest Florida.
Alabama and Northwest Florida have some of the highest poverty rates in the country. In Baldwin county 26,200 children are living with food insecurity. To put this into perspective 1 in 5 children in Baldwin County live in below poverty level. In Escambia county 58,790 of our children experience food insecurity meaning 1 in 4 children live below the poverty level. With that being said, many of these students rely on free or reduced priced school meals….but that is not always enough nutrition for these children. Some children get one meal a day and that is the meal they receive while they are at school. To reduce the number of hungry children, Alabama Credit Union has partnered with regional food banks to introduce Secret Meals For Hungry Children, a program that provides food to children who go hungry during the weekends due to no fault of their own.
After the students are identified, they will begin to receive food packs in their back packs, anonymously each Friday or on the last day of school before a weekend or holiday. This is handled secretly, to prevent the child from being embarrassed or singled out. The child’s parent or guardian is not usually notified to prevent the food being taken by an older child or an adult. Each of the food packs contains items such as easy to pull cans, juices, and crackers. All items are child-friendly, nonperishable, easily consumed and vitamin-fortified.
