While the Alabama Gulf Coast is known for its superior seafood, there are also a wide array of restaurants that serve something equally satisfying, mouthwatering and bursting with flavor that comes from the fields, rather than the waters.
That’s right—we’re talking about the best burgers at the beach. And we recruited a local burger expert, Taran Pergram, to give you all the juiciest details and top-notch recommendations.
Taran has lived in the area for eight years and currently works as a videographer. He specializes in creating engaging commercials and vibrant video content. You’ve probably seen his work on Coast360 TV, the Coast360 YouTube channel, and on various social media platforms for popular Gulf Shores and Orange Beach businesses.

When Taran isn't indulging in a delicious burger or out getting the perfect shot of one, you’ll find him exploring the island trails through Gulf State Park and on the Jeff Friend Trail in the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.
And we can't forget to mention that prior to becoming a professional videographer and capturing shots of the island's best dishes, Taran gained restaurant experience by working at local eateries—perhaps even a few of your favorites. That’s why we couldn’t think of anyone more qualified to share their knowledge of the most savory and sizzling dishes on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
So Taran, as a local burger connoisseur, how many burger restaurants would you say you’ve tried in the area?
It would be impossible to narrow it down, probably close to 30.
Wow! That’s an impressive number of restaurants you’ve sampled. Since you’ve lived in the area for eight years now, do you remember the first Alabama Gulf Coast burger you ever tried?
The first burger I tried was Lulu’s. It was on spring break while I was in high school. It’s a great place to go with a group. The atmosphere is really family friendly, plus there’s lots of ways for kids to play so parents can relax.
What did you think?
The cheeseburger is a classic. You can customize your toppings, which makes it an obvious winner.
That sounds like a great option for groups with picky eaters. It’s always good to have something for everyone. Speaking of toppings, what are your favorite ways to dress up a burger?
Loaded all the way. It’s gotta be a cheeseburger. If I’m choosing my own, I like bacon, grilled onions, pepper jack cheese, lettuce and ketchup. However, I’m always down to try something new.
Is there anything you dislike on a burger?
I’m personally not a tomato guy. I’m also not a fan of fried eggs on a burger.
We’ve all had good burgers, but what makes the burger great?
First of all, it starts with the bun. Second, the beef that’s used must be fresh. You also can’t be afraid to try new things. You know, step outside “traditional burgerdom” with your combinations.
“Traditional burgerdom,” what a perfect way to describe an out-of-this-world burger. What restaurant in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach has come closest to serving your perfect burger?
Definitely Bleus Burger’s Highway 61 burger. I wouldn’t even think to change a thing. It’s got beef, smoked cheddar, bacon, candied jalapenos, crispy onions, house barbecue and baby arugula on a brioche bun.
We wouldn’t change a thing either, that sounds delicious! To go along with such a scrumptious meal, what do you order on the side?
It's gotta be classic french fries, but onion rings will also do. Whatever you order—it must be fried and crunchy to offset the burger.
Well said! In no particular order, will you list your top three favorite places to dine on burgers for us?
I would say The Tin Top for a classic burger—their meat is really high quality. Go to Bleus Burger to try something you can’t make at home, and head to Pirates Cove for the perfect place to enjoy your burger.
It seems like you’ve really done your research. Where would you say has the most unique burger you’ve ever had?
The Cobalt Beast Burger for sure. It’s a wild game burger with four different types of meat.
Based on the restaurants you’ve tried, who has the largest burger?
The Hangout Lifeguard Burger is by far the biggest I’ve tried. It’s got two half-pound patties and is piled high with fried onion straws.
Now it’s time for some rapid-fire questions:
Best burger to grab on the go?
The Sugar Shack at The Wharf

Taran, thank you for sharing your gourmet insight with us. We have one last question, what recommendations would you give to tourists in search of a classic Alabama Gulf Coast burger?
The seafood is always good, but the burgers on the Alabama Gulf Coast are where it’s at.
