They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as free things to do in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach (and beyond)! Get ready, because we’re about to spill the beans on 12 of our favorite free activities right here on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
1. Hiking & Biking
We tend to go on and on (and on and on) about this little nature gem, but the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is ideal for running, walking, biking, sightseeing, and taking in nature—all for free!
2. Get Back to Nature
Speaking of getting in touch with nature for free, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing, canoeing, and kayak launching. This sanctuary of native flora and fauna is a natural oasis that can’t wait to welcome you for a leisurely day outdoors.
3. No Really, Get Back to Nature
We’re serious, getting outdoors is one of our top recommendations for visiting our beaches. To scratch your nature-loving itch, check out the 600+ acres of outdoor adventure at Graham Creek Nature Preserve! Here, you’ll find 10 miles of breathtaking trails and views we never get tired of. This perfect path is the ideal way to spend a day with your friends and family.
4. Adventure Time
Team work really does make the dream work. Grab your crew and get the whole family in on a modern day treasure hunt when you go Geocaching. Head to Geocaching.com for instructions on getting your adventure started.
5. It's a Bird!
If you’re into birding, discover the wonders of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. Stay in the Gulf Shores-Orange Beach loop, or venture out to the Eastern Shore, Mobile, or Bayou La Batre. Join in on all the heron happenings as you wave hello to all our winged friends!
6. A Festival for Everything
One thing about us is we never say no to a festival. Check out one of the many free festivals on Alabama’s Beaches throughout the year. A few of our favorite freebies include:
The Annual National Shrimp Festival
Orange Beach Festival of Art
Orange Beach Freedom Fest
Mardi Gras Parades
Fishing Tournament Weigh-Ins
7. Dinosaurs (yes, you read that right)
Sometimes, you need to take your family fun to Jurassic levels. Seeing dinosaurs on your beach vacation is totally normal, right? Down here it is. In Elberta near Barber Marina, you'll find a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and prehistoric replicas just hanging out in the woods (ya’ know… like dinosaurs do). Be sure to pay them a visit on your next vacation!
8. Alabama or England?
While you’re in Elberta, you’ll also find a replica of Stonehenge aptly dubbed Bamahenge… we don’t know why, but it’s there and it’s pretty awesome. Skip the plane ride and enjoy all the fun of a U.K. adventure, right here in our own backyard.
9. Museum Time
We believe the best way to learn about our rich history is to experience it for yourself! Find all the best of Baldwin County Free of charge at our local museums.
10. Civil War History
Damn the Torpedoes! Full speed ahead! It’s a great battle cry and an even better story. That’s our motto. Follow the Civil War Trail to become immersed in the riveting Battle of Mobile Bay.
11. Performance in the Sky
Catch the Blue Angels by land or by water! The annual homecoming show is not to be missed, but locals know that watching their practices (typically on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from March to November) is just as magical.
12. Our Favorite Option (don't tell the others)
Go to the beach, of course! It’s our favorite on this list of free things to do in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and one look at any of our 32 miles of sugar-white sands is plenty of explanation as to why! We invite you to kick back, relax, and soak up the sights each time you visit our beautiful beaches.
