2024 Winter Showcase Series: The Gardens Built on Coca-Cola

On a Sunday afternoon in 1932, Mobile’s Coca-Cola bottler Walter Bellingrath and his wife extended an open invitation to visit their estate while the azaleas were in full bloom.  Some 4,700 took them up on the offer and the 60 acres of gardens have been open ever since.  At the center is the couple’s 1935 home with its 15 rooms filled with the original furnishings enjoyed by the couple and their guests.  Today it almost appears that they have briefly stepped away.

Bellingrath Gardens and Home has received numerous awards over its near century of existence.  In November of 2023 it was added to the list of the 12 Gardens of the World Worth Travelling for in 2024, by the International Garden Tourism Conference held in Victoria, British Columbia.  It is the only American garden to receive that honor.

Tom McGehee, the Museum Director for Bellingrath Gardens and Home, will offer some history of the Bellingraths, their Gardens and their Home.
