Know where lifeguards are located
Lifeguards patrol public beaches seasonally and are stationed at Gulf Shores Public Beach, Romar Beach, and Cotton Bayou in Orange Beach. Even with lifeguards, swimming in the Gulf of Mexico carries risks...
Be prepared for rip currents
...And rip currents definitely fall into the risk category. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the area of breaking waves.
Rip Current Safety
And know what to do if you get caught in one
If caught in a rip current, remain calm and do not swim against the current. A rip current works like a treadmill, so swimming against it will only result in rapid fatigue and could lead to drowning. Instead, swim parallel to the shore, and you'll eventually come out of the "rip." Once free, swim at an angle, away from the current, and towards the beach.
Hydration is key
When you're packing your cooler for a day at the beach, bottles of water are the most important element. How much you should pack may be more than you think! You know the 8 cups a day rule, but that number increases when you're spending the day in the hot sun, so be sure to load up enough water for each person in your crew to drink throughout the day!
Know the importance of sun safety
We've got plenty of that sunshine goodness on our beautiful beaches, and although it makes a good day at the beach better, it's imperative to take precautions to protect yourself from its potentially harmful rays. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and even a hat for protection. If you bring a tent or umbrella for a shaded barrier, be sure to take it with you at the end of each day (remember, Leave Only Footprints!).
Don’t rub sand on a jellyfish sting
Don't rub sand or apply any other remedies that you may have seen in an episode of Friends. Other myths include applying alcohol, ethanol, ammonia, fresh water, or meat tenderizer. Instead, try rinsing the area with vinegar or saltwater, or taking a hot shower.
