Gulf Shores, Ala – June 12, 2018 – The City of Gulf Shores is proud to announce its new status as a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community, designated by the League of American Bicyclists.
For 2018, League of American Bicyclists awarded 17 new Bicycle Friendly Communities and renewed 17 communities. Gulf Shores is only the second city in Alabama to achieve this prestigious honor and joins 450 Bicycle Friendly Communities across the United States and the District of Columbia.
Since 2015, the City of Gulf Shores has invested over $900,000 in improved bicycle facilities. There are currently 52 miles of shared use pathways connecting Gulf Shores, the Gulf State Park and Orange Beach.
“The Bicycle Friendly program emphasizes that bicycling is a simple solution to many of the challenges we face in our country,” Andy Bauer, Director of Planning and Zoning for the City of Gulf Shores, stated. “As Gulf Shores residents know well, bicycling is about mobility, sustainability, health and so much more. Bicycle Friendly Communities are great places to live, work and visit.”
The League of American Bicyclists began the Bicycle Friendly Community program in 1995 in efforts to “revolutionize the way communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability, and transportation needs, while allowing them to benchmark their progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness.” The program has accepted over 1,600 applications for Bicycle Friendly designation since 2002.
