Foley will celebrate the city’s 45th Arbor Day on Saturday, Feb. 28, by offering horticultural advice, giving away more than 700 trees and recognizing the public service of two residents.
The annual Foley Arbor Day will begin at 1 p.m. at the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermens Market, located at 781 Farmers Market Way.
Each year, the city dedicates trees to be planted as memorials to local citizens who contributed to the community. During this year’s commemoration, trees will be presented in memory of City Councilman Richard “Dick” Dayton and Foley Marketing Director LaDonna Hinesley. Both public servants died in 2025.
The city will give away 720 trees, each planted in 3-gallon containers, during the Arbor Day celebration. Residents may receive one tree each at the event.
Tree varieties available will include summer red maple, green giant arborvitae, live oak, crape myrtles, Nuttall oak and several varieties of magnolia.
Foley has been recognized as a Tree City USA community for promoting tree planting. Trees help reduce erosion, lower heating and cooling costs, produce oxygen, provide wildlife habitat and enhance the environment’s beauty.
Riviera Utilities will serve as co-host of the Arbor Day celebration.
The Alabama Forestry Commission, Baldwin County Master Gardeners and certified arborists will also participate in the event.
Members of Boy Scout Troop 77 will assist with distributing trees.
Winning posters from the Arbor Day Poster Contest will be on display, and the Foley High School Air Force Junior ROTC will present the colors.
