Follow these tips for a fun, worry-free beach day on the Gulf. On the Alabama Gulf Coast, fun comes naturally, but safety keeps the good times rolling, wave after wave.
RIP CURRENTS: HOW TO GET OUT SAFELY
Rip currents are fast, narrow channels of water moving away from the shore. If you get caught, don’t panic or try to swim straight back in (that’s exhausting and dangerous). Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re free of the current, then head back to the beach at an angle. If you can’t make it to shore, float or tread water and signal for help.
FLAGS, WEATHER AND BEACH NOTIFICATIONS
Beach flag systems are your best friend for knowing daily water conditions. Yellow is moderate, meaning it is safe to swim. Red indicates a high current, and double red means the water is closed to the public. Purple flags let swimmers know that dangerous marine life is present.
Text ALBEACHES to 888777 for daily updates, and always check posted flags before diving in, because conditions can change fast.
JELLYFISH STINGS
These beach floaters can pack an unpleasant surprise. If stung, rinse with vinegar or saltwater (not freshwater, which can worsen the sting). Remove tentacles with tweezers or the edge of a credit card, then apply heat to reduce pain. Most stings are mild, but seek medical help if you have trouble breathing or other severe reactions.
SUN SAFETY
Alabama Gulf Coast sunshine is glorious, but powerful. Apply broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen generously (and reapply every two hours, or after swimming). Don’t forget hats, UV-blocking sunglasses and lightweight, breathable clothing. A pop-up beach tent or umbrella is a lifesaver during midday rays!
PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
Many beach access points lead straight across busy streets. Use designated pedestrian crossings, wait for traffic to stop and keep kids close by. Drivers, remember: Vacation mode doesn’t replace road rules!
LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS
A cleaner beach means a better experience for everyone. Dispose of trash properly, fill in any sand holes and take all your belongings home. This protects wildlife and keeps the shoreline beautiful for generations of visitors.
Whether you’re splashing in the surf or strolling at sunset, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your Alabama Gulf Coast getaway as safe as it is spectacular!
