The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo reached a national and global audience in 2006 when it was featured on Animal Planet’s popular documentary, “The Little Zoo That Could.” The program recounted the zoo’s heroic efforts to protect its inhabitants from the tropical events that come with a location only a mile from the beach. (We try not to say that weather H word down here.)

Now after many years of fundraising and hard work, and thanks to the generous donation of land on County Road 6, the zoo has moved four miles inland to a safer and larger location. The nearly 200 species have a comfortable 25 acres to call home at the new location, which is the first zoo in the U.S. to be built from the ground up in more than 20 years.

The Safari Club
Located at the new zoo, The Safari Club is making news for more than just their tasty menu options. The restaurant is the first certified “Green Restaurant” in Alabama. They use no Styrofoam products, no plastic straws, and all to-go containers are biodegradable or recyclable. In addition, the facility has onsite composting, sources local ingredients, and even has a garden to grow its own fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
