This stunning stretch of the Gulf Islands National Seashore carries the name and legacy of Army Private Rosamond Johnson Jr., a local hero whose courage and sacrifice shaped both history and community.
During the Jim Crow era, most Pensacola beaches remained closed to Black families. What is now known as Johnson Beach became a cherished refuge where children could splash in Gulf waters and families could enjoy picnics on the sand. The beach's significance grew even greater when the community chose to honor its youngest fallen soldier.
Private Johnson enlisted at just 15 years old to support his family,lying about his age to join the Army. Two years later, during the Korean War, this brave teenager rescued two wounded soldiers and brought them to safety before losing his life while attempting to save a third comrade. Johnson became Escambia County's first Korean War casualty and received the Purple Heart posthumously in 1950.
Today, Johnson Beach welcomes visitors to experience its natural beauty while learning about Johnson's heroism at the Rosamond Johnson Memorial near the entrance station. (Entrance fees are $15 for pedestrians and cyclists, and $25 for vehicles.)
Each May, the Gulf Islands National Seashore hosts Rosamond Johnson Beach Day on the first Saturday of the month, beginning at 10 a.m., bringing together the Johnson family, dignitaries and community members to honor his memory.
