Here Fishy Fishy – The Fisherman’s Guide to the Gulf Coast

As a little girl, my dad made certain that a fishing pole was all but glued to my hands.  My vocabulary words were crankbait, spinnerbait, and buzzbait.  I had a thorough knowledge of what it meant to set the hook, when to pitch a jig, and how to remedy a backlash.  Whether it was practicing casting from the boat in our driveway, sneaking over to the pond at the golf course near our home, or spending the day fishing on the Coast, casting a line was an integral part of my upbringing.

Trolling

The best part about fishing is that it’s something that we did (and still do) together as a family.  Southern travelers have seemingly endless choices for where to take the family on a fishing excursion on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Where are our faves? We’re so very glad you asked.

Gulf State Park Pier

Open 24 hours a day, the Gulf State Park Fishing Pier boasts status as the second longest pier on the Gulf Coast. With bathrooms, a concession area, retail area for tackle and souvenirs, and comfort stations, the pier is an ideal spot for both families and avid fishermen. Even if you don’t fish, it is a great place to watch the sunset, take a walk, or kick back and relax.

Charters

Alabama’s Gulf Coast houses one of the biggest charter fishing fleets, dozens of marinas, and hundreds of fishing vessels. It doesn’t matter if you’re a serious angler or beginner fisherman, the Coast is home to some of the best captains to guide you on your voyage. The best part? It’s both entertaining and educational (shhh, don’t tell the kiddos).

What’s in season by month?

Catching fish is fun, but not everyone knows how to turn the day’s big catch into a tasty dinner. Fortunately, several local restaurants will offer a Hook and Cook option where they cook your catch for you. Just bring in your cleaned fish and the chef will fix it up for ya! Here’s what will be in season during your Coastal vacation:
