Stand-up paddleboarding and yoga make waves this spring and summer
This year, Alabama’s beaches are bringing fitness into focus. With paddleboarding competitions and yoga retreats taking center stage in 2016, there are many ways for residents and visitors to get out, get active and get centered during the warm-weather months in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Below is a list of the major fitness events taking place from April through July.
PaddleFit Core Certification
Date: April 16-17
Time: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Location: Tacky Jack’s Orange Beach (27206 Safe Harbor Dr.)
Details: Core certification represents the essential and foundational elements of the PaddleFit coaching system. This event includes an introduction to the coaching system, water safety and rescue, SUP fundamentals, foundational SUP fitness concepts, physical and technique assessment and much more. Certification is ideal for intermediate and advanced paddlers looking to grow in their abilities and to educate others on the benefits of stand-up paddleboarding.
Awakened Life Yoga Retreat
Date: April 21-24
Time: Varies by day
Location: Alabama Gulf State Park (20115 St., AL-135, Gulf Shores)
Admission: Prices vary by packages and days/events attending
Details: A family-friendly yoga retreat incorporating a variety of yoga classes including power vinyasa, aerial, restorative, kundalini and much more. Packages include meals, cabin and/or tent camping options, native nature tours and other activities for yogis of all ages to enjoy. Therapies such as Thai massage, Reiki, acupuncture, energy clearing and reflexology will be available throughout the retreat. Each night will end with song, dance and spiritual reflection.
The Good Life Ride
Date: May 7
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Begins at Page and Palette in Fairhope, AL (32 S. Section St.) and ends at Tacky Jack’s in Gulf Shores (240 E. 24th Ave.)
Details: A 62-mile ride taking place on Mother’s Day weekend during one of the most beautiful times of year in coastal Alabama. The ride is of moderate difficulty with a flat terrain through a rural route. Proceeds from the event benefit bicycle safety awareness. The ride will end with an after-race party at Tacky Jack’s.
2nd Annual Flora-Bama Gulf Coast Paddle Championship
Date: July 23-24
Time: 9 p.m. – until
Location: Flora-Bama Yacht Club (17350 Perdido Kay Drive, Pensacola)
Admission: Free to spectators. Participant fees vary.
Details: The competition begins on Saturday. It will be open to the public and will offer three courses of different difficulty levels. There will also be a race option for children. Awards and a post-race party will kick-off upon the end of the competition. On Sunday, there will be two “fun” races and a free kid’s clinic.
