Remember those community barbeques we all loved as kids? Where the community gathered to eat the best food in town? Well, we have one right here on the Alabama Gulf Coast in Orange Beach at the Orange Beach Community Center on Canal Road.

Be sure to add the 44th Annual Orange Beach Fire Department BBQ to your itinerary when making plans to hit the beach this summer. Mark your calendars for June 12th – the day when 4500 pounds of Boston Butts meet (no pun intended) their match on the monster grill, affectionately known as the Black Dragon.

Held from 11am to 3pm, be sure to come hungry. These firemen know their BBQ and will be offering you the choice of a BBQ plate or two BBQ sandwiches for just $8. Plates include everything you could ever ask for at a beach BBQ – chopped pork, baked beans, coleslaw, bread, sauce, and a pickle.

Picking up the BBQ on your way to relaxing along the sugar-white sands of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores? No problem. A convenient drive-thru service will be set up to accommodate. Or, if you prefer to spend the afternoon chatting with locals, come early and grab a table. The Ladies Auxiliary will also have homemade baked items including cookies, brownies, cakes, and pies. And if you are looking for more than just a plate or sandwich, whole Boston butts and bulk pork go on sale at noon.

BBQ is a popular southern cuisine and the perfect addition to a day at the beach. Did we mention all money raised from the Orange Beach FD BBQ sales is used within the fire department to sponsor several community services? Orange Beach Fire Department provides the community with free CPR classes, held twice monthly. Additional benefiting projects include public education programs for area daycares, churches, schools and senior groups.

For more information on the Orange Beach Fire Department BBQ call Ms. Jeri Wilson at 251-981-6166. Tickets will be available day –of at the door.

Zeke’s Landing

When you come to the gulf coast, there are many adventures and sights to see. One place, Zeke’s Landing, is home to retail shops, restaurants and of course a marina. All are situated on Cotton Bayou in Orange Beach.

Zeke’s Marina is beautiful just to take the children and watch the activity. However, if you really want an adventure take a charter boat to catch the best seafood around. Zeke’s Charter Fleet staff has top mates from customer service to dock and deckhands as well as the charter boat captains. Their number one goal is for you to have the best time with your group or family. With the largest charter fleet on the gulf, Zeke’s provides you and family not only the experience but the memories of a lifetime. Those wanting to taste the excitement of reeling in sheepshead, redfish, flounder, pompano or trout (just to name a few) can try a little inshore fishing along the back bays in Orange Beach. This type of charter is a great trip for the first father/son fishing adventure. With Father’s Day just a couple of months away, now’s the time to start planning.

Zeke’s also has other affordable charters. Trips vary from fishing oil rigs to trolling and bottom fishing to deep sea. On these trips, you can haul in triggerfish and amberjack as well as different species of snapper ranging from vermillion to red, lane and white. However, recent fishing regulations have come into effect, cutting red snapper season down. For specific start and end dates be sure to ask the folks at Zeke’s. They will have all the information you need for fishing seasons, size and creel limits. By the way, all trips include fishing license, bait and tackle. All you have to do is bring an ice chest loaded with drinks and food. If you forget an item or two, Zeke’s dock store does carry snacks, drinks and sandwiches. Glass containers are not allowed on charters or at the docks.

If the fun of fishing gets you too tired to clean your catch, those services are provided at a reasonable rate which is based on whole weight. However, don’t forget to tip those nice deckhands who handle the cleaning process for you.

As mentioned, Zeke’s offers many different types of charter boats and fishing experiences, however, some trips may not be ideal for younger children. So, ask Zeke’s what is the best fishing experience for your family. For more information contact Zeke’s charter or marina services at 1-800-793-4044 or 251-981-4044. Their Web site offers a plethora of information on all services they provide. The marina is located at 26619 Perdido Beach Blvd. in Orange Beach, AL.
